Automated Fingerprint Identification System Launched

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa ceremonially launched the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) which helps to identify criminals, at the invitation of the Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order Major General (Retd.) Nanda Mallawaarachchi during his visit to the Deyata Kirula premises on 27th February 2014.

The system was designed and developed by  the Software Development Unit of the University of Colombo School of Computing lead by its head Harsha Wijewardena. Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) financially backed the project initiated under a concept of the Defence Seceretary.

With the introduction of AFIS, Sri Lanka became the first South Asian country which has invented such a sophisticated technology to identify criminals. The system enables  police to ascertain the identity of criminals within three minutes which hitherto was more time consuming.

Automated Fingerprint Identification System LaunchedThe Police Spokesman Mr. Ajith Rohana stated  that they were launching the Automated Fingerprint Identification System  developed by Theekshana, the company of University of  Colombo School of Computing within this week.
